India’s Health Ministry has banned the manufacture, sale and distribution of the antibiotic Colistin and its formulations for use in livestock, poultry, farmed fish and in feed supplements, the national media reports this morning.

The ban has been imposed under provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

It is also understood that the ministry will require manufacturers of colistin to mention the words “not to be used in food producing animals, poultry, aqua farming and animal feed supplements” on labels.
